Chicken meat is one of the favorite and most consumed meat worldwide.We love to eat it in a restaurant or simply prepare it at home . But when it comes of preparation procedure, in our excessive need to keep it clean and safe we wash it previously in order to remove any bacteria.
FDA found that washing chicken meat before preparing it increases the spread of the harmful bacteria, not removing them.
Raw chicken contains bacteria Salmonella and campylobacter, that cause poisoning and are harmful to human’s health. The two most common types of bacteria present in chicken are
Common symptoms of salmonella poisoning are:
- abdominal cramps.
Diarrheal diseases,cause excessive abdominal ache that last up to 2 weeks are caused by campylobacter and can have long-term effects like arthritis and a very rare disease called Guillan-Barre syndrome.
The FDA explains that it cannot be washed with water and by washing the meat you actually spread the bacteria .
How to be safe :
- cook the meat well
- steam it hot
- consume only if when cut there is no pink meat and the juices are running clear
- don’t store chicken meat at temperatures higher than 4 degrees Celsius because it attracts bacteria
